Rudy is a 10-year-old yellow Lab, about 78 pounds, and he has spent most of his life claiming every soft surface in our house. The couch. The rug in front of the TV. My side of the bed if I get up too slowly. But the one thing he would not claim was his own bed, the EHEYCIGA orthopedic bed we got him. He would circle it, sniff it, then flop onto the tile floor next to it, and I could not figure out why.

Our house in Ormond Beach is a single-story with tile floors through most of the main rooms, and those floors are hard on an older dog. Rudy started getting stiff in his back hips around age 8, slow to stand up after naps and hesitant on the three back-porch steps. The tile was always cold and slick under his paws, and the flat bed we had for him had flattened out years ago into little more than a mat. He would lie on it for a few minutes, then slide off onto the floor where he could at least brace himself.

I spent a lot of evenings watching him do this before I did anything about it. That is just how I am. I am a retired dental office manager, I keep a notebook of what changes and what does not, and I do not buy something for Rudy without thinking it through for a few weeks first. I also do not start anything, a supplement, a bed, a harness, without checking with our vet first. The vet was the one who suggested we look at an orthopedic dog bed, after I described Rudy sliding off his old mat onto the tile. That is how we ended up with the EHEYCIGA bed.

So about ten months ago, we ordered the XL size. It arrived rolled up tight in a box, and the instructions said to let it expand for 24 to 48 hours after unpacking. I laid it out in the living room on the tile, and for the first two days it looked like a very large flat pillow that was still figuring itself out. I will be honest, I was not sure it was going to be thick enough. Then on the third morning I came out with my coffee and Rudy was on it, head resting on the raised edge, snoring. He has slept on it every night since.

Rudy has slept on that bed every single night since the third morning, and that is the most honest review I can give.

The bed Rudy finally claimed

The EHEYCIGA orthopedic dog bed uses memory foam and egg crate foam for even support and pressure relief, with 3-sided bolsters for neck and head support. It is the bed that got a 78-pound Lab off the tile floor and kept him there.

What sold me, beyond the fact that he actually uses it, is the construction. The bed uses memory foam and egg crate foam to provide even support and pressure relief, which matters for a dog his size. The 3-sided bolsters give him somewhere to rest his head, and he does use them, he curls into the open side like it is a den. There is a waterproof film between the fleece surface and the bottom fabric, which I did not think I needed until the first time he came in from the yard with wet paws and flopped down anyway. The bottom has a non-skid surface, and on our tile floors that matters more than I can tell you. His old mat would slide across the room when he jumped on it. This bed stays put.

The size is 44 inches long, 32 inches wide, and 6.5 inches thick, which sounds like a lot until you watch a 78-pound Lab stretch out on it. He has room to sprawl, and when he does not want to sprawl he curls up against the bolsters. The maximum weight recommendation is 100 pounds, so we are well within it, but I would not size down for a big dog. The XL is the one that fits him.

Here is what I have learned about the tile floor problem, and it is the thing I wish someone had told me years ago. The issue was never that Rudy did not want a bed. The issue was that his old bed did not give him anything to push against when he stood up. With the memory foam and the non-skid bottom, he can brace himself and get up without sliding. I noticed the difference in his morning get-ups within the first couple of weeks, not overnight, but steadily. He still gets stiff, he is a 10-year-old Lab with hips that have been slowing down since he was 8, but he does not have to fight the floor on top of it.

There are a few things I would tell anyone considering this bed. First, give it the full 24 to 48 hours to expand before you judge it. Second, if you have a dog that chews, watch the first few days, the bolsters are soft and inviting. Third, and this is the one I care about most, talk to your vet before you assume a bed will fix a mobility problem. A good bed made Rudy more comfortable, but it was the combination of the bed, the Cosequin chewable the vet recommended two years ago, the omega-3 oil on his dinner, and regular short walks that kept him moving. The bed did its job, which was giving him a safe, supportive place to rest. It did not cure his hips, and I would be suspicious of anyone who told you a bed would.

What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table

If you were sitting at my kitchen table with a cup of coffee, here is what I would say. If your dog is sliding off a flat mat onto tile or hardwood, and you have checked with your vet and ruled out anything urgent, a bed with real support and a non-skid bottom is worth trying. The EHEYCIGA is the one that worked for us. It is easy to clean, and it has held up for ten months of daily use by a dog who treats every soft surface as his personal property.

But I would also say this: watch your dog, not the marketing. Rudy told me the bed was right by sleeping on it. He told me the old one was wrong by sleeping next to it. And if you are not sure, ask your vet. That is the advice I give everyone, and it is the advice I wish I had followed years ago, before I bought two flat beds that ended up in the garage. The EHEYCIGA is the first bed Rudy has claimed on his own, and at 10 years old, that is exactly what I wanted for him.
